8 marzo

March 8, International Women’s Day

This date has its origins in the labor movement, carried out in the middle of the 19th century, a time when women lived with many limitations and with violence. During that time, women especially demanded civil, political, and social rights, which little by little would be recognized (Geographic, 2018). This moment would only be the beginning of a great fight, since today, March 8 has become a key date to fight for women’s rights.

In 2021 we commemorate one year of that march full of anger and pain, seeing that femicides in Mexico did not stop, where 10 women a day were murdered in the country. But it also commemorates a march full of love that unites women, fighting for those who are no longer here and fighting for this situation to change.

Although there is controversy over how many women express themselves during the protest, especially the painting of monuments, the fight and demands being made are legitimate. It is necessary to understand that the capacity of these movements to produce a social change is linked to their disruptive or threatening capacity of the existing social order. For this reason, there have been cases of police violence against participants in the protest. Also, there have been certain sectors in society that try to discredit the feminist movement, since it is a movement that goes against the system itself.

For many people, protesting is something insignificant and will not bring changes. However, each of the marches that have taken place has brought positive changes to women. Each manifestation begins to generate the awakening of a problem of violence and machismo not only in Mexico but also in various countries around the world. It has created an impact in terms of making violence against women visible and that there is still much work to be done to achieve an equitable society.

We are almost a year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico, however, the feminist movement has not stopped, the fight continues with or without a pandemic. Likewise, the role of women during this situation has been truly remarkable. Women leaders around the world have known how to act during these difficult times. There are several examples such as Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, and Sanna Marin, Prime Minister of Finland. They reacted quickly and took action and are now among the European countries with the fewest reported cases of COVID-19 (Mundo, 2020).

Even though the current situation is really difficult, in Mexico there has been a very interesting case, the “nenis”. This term is used to refer to enterprising women who learned to adapt even in times of pandemic. E-commerce has increased a lot, so the “nenis” saw an opportunity to continue generating profits and supporting their family. The impact of COVID-19 on women’s lives has been quite devastating. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) mentions that 1.3 million women became unemployed (Olmos, 2021). Although the term is the cause of mockery and memes on social networks, the “nenis” are women who have managed to boost their business on social networks, through a cell phone and the implementation of strategies to market their products and retain their customers.

Whether you are a man or a woman, we would like you to join us in supporting this cause from the sense of humanity. Some of the actions that you could carry out are to open spaces for dialogue where you listen carefully to women, inform yourself about the movement in an open way from reliable and unbiased sources, not protect or justify any abuser or rapist, and reflect on the machista behaviors and micromachisms that contain normalized violence. The change comes from each one of us and it starts by becoming aware of our thoughts and actions.

Finally, through “sororidad”, a term used to refer to this mutual support between women to ally and work together, freedom, justice, and equity have been sought. For this reason, March 8 is an important day to continue thinking about the current role of women and their positive impact on our society, to achieve the goal of a more equitable and just world.
