Los Pinos del Presidente/ The Presidential Pine Trees

Hace quince días leíste sobre la excursión que realizamos en Spanish Training Academy al Castillo de Chapultepec, una de las residencias presidenciales a lo largo de la historia de México. Aprendimos que ésta albergó a emperadores y presidentes, pero que Lázaro Cárdenas decidió mudarla a otro lado, pues el palacio era muy ostentoso e iba en contra de los ideales posrevolucionarios. Hoy conoceremos sobre nuestra excursión a la Residencia de Los Pinos, que fue la casa oficial del líder de México durante más de 80 años desde el adiós al Castillo de Chapultepec. Cabe destacar que, si bien Los Pinos no tiene el arte y la historia que el Castillo, no se queda atrás, pues sus orígenes datan desde la época de Moctezuma.

 

              El terreno en el que está construida esta residencia también se encuentra en las faldas del Cerro de Chapultepec, por lo que la mudanza no fue tan radical. Su historia inicia con la orden de Moctezuma de realizar un acueducto para surtir agua desde el cerro y alimentar Tenochtitlán. Estos canales fueron decorados con ahuehuetes y flores por parte de Nezahualcóyotl. La imagen de Los Pinos fue drásticamente cambiada con la llegada de los españoles, pues ellos mandaron a construir el Molino del Rey que se le adjudicó a Hernán Cortés.

 

              Tras la Independencia, este lugar fue adquirido por José Rincón, posteriormente lo vendió en 1851 por un valor de $2,500 MXN. El comprador fue José Martínez del Río, una persona que poseía diversos terrenos, pero éste era el más pequeño de todos, por lo que fue nombrado “La Hormiga”. La posesión fue expropiada, pero regresó a manos de la familia Martínez del Río para ser comprada por Álvaro Obregón y convertirse en la residencia oficial del jefe de estado.

 

              A partir de este instante, el lugar se fue adecuando para poder albergar al comandante supremo de las fuerzas armadas. Esta adecuación incluye albercas, caballerizas, jardines, plazas, espacios de tiro, así como el espacio militar denominado Campo Marte. El presidente Lázaro Cárdenas tomó la decisión de convertir el Castillo de Chapultepec en el Museo Nacional de Historia y trasladar la residencia oficial al rancho “La Hormiga”. Sin embargo, decidió que este nombre no era el adecuado para albergar al líder de la nación, por lo que cambió su denominación a “Los Pinos”. Cárdenas eligió este nombre para recordar una huerta en Michoacán, donde conoció a su esposa.  

 

              Esta tradición de ser la residencia oficial duró durante 83 años, hasta que el presidente en turno, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, bajo las políticas de austeridad que caracterizaron su candidatura, decidió mudar la residencia nuevamente al Palacio Nacional de la Ciudad de México. Esta decisión fue tomada bajo el argumento de que era un gasto que podía omitirse, pues se podía economizar al trasladar su morada al mismo lugar donde tiene su oficina oficial. Esta iniciativa recibió apoyo de la población dado que los gastos en la figura presidencial parecían excesivos a ojos de la mayoría de los mexicanos.

 

              Además de las intenciones económicas del presidente, este cambio generó que este recinto abriera sus puertas al público general para convertirse en el nuevo Centro Cultural Los Pinos. Se ha acondicionado la Calzada de los Presidentes, donde hay estatuas de los que han sido líderes de México que te dan la bienvenida a aquella que fuera alguna vez su casa. A lo largo del recorrido se pueden visitar las salas donde tenían juntas a nivel nacional e internacional, los mobiliarios que acondicionaron por tantos años esta residencia, salas de cine, el búnker presidencial, candelabros, automóviles presidenciales… Aquellos objetos cotidianos que envestían la imagen de los ex mandatarios de México. Al inicio de la pandemia del COVID-19, este Centro Cultural se convirtió en albergue para personal médico, pues así se mantendría a sus familias sanas y lejos del riesgo de convivir con alguien que podría ser fácilmente infectado al estar en la primera línea contra del virus.

The Presidential Pine Trees

 

Fifteen days ago, you read about the class trip we make at Spanish Training Academy to the Castillo de Chapultepec, one of the presidential residences throughout the history of Mexico.           The land on which this residence is built is also located on the slopes of Cerro de Chapultepec, so the change was not so radical. Its story begins with Moctezuma’s order to build an aqueduct to supply water from the hill to feed Tenochtitlán. These canals were decorated with ahuehuetes and flowers by Nezahualcóyotl. This Aztec image of Los Pinos was drastically changed with the arrival of the Spaniards, as they ordered the construction of the Molino del Rey that was thought to be owned by Hernán Cortés.

 

          After Independence, this place was acquired by José Rincón. Later, he sold it in 1851 for a value of $ 2,500 MXN. The buyer was José Martínez del Río, a person who owned various lands, this the smallest of all, for which it was named “La Hormiga” (The Ant). However, he decided that this name was not suitable to house the leader of the nation, so he changed its name to “Los Pinos”. Cárdenas chose this name to recall an orchard in Michoacán where he met his wife.

 

          This tradition of being the official residence lasted for 83 years until the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, under the austerity policies that characterized his candidacy, decided to move the residence back to the National Palace of Mexico City. This decision was made under the argument that it was an expense that could be saved, since it could be economized by moving his residence to the same place where he has his official office. This initiative received support from the population since the expenses in the presidential figure seemed excessive in the eyes of most Mexicans.

 

          In addition to the economic intentions of the president, this change led to this site opening its doors to the general public to become the new Los Pinos Cultural Center. The Calzada de los Presidentes has been set up, where there are statues of the former leaders of Mexico who welcome you to what was once their home. Throughout the tour, you can visit the rooms where they had meetings at national and international level, the furniture that conditioned this residence for so many years, movie theaters, the presidential bunker, chandeliers, presidential cars… those everyday objects that once praised the image of the president of Mexico. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, this Cultural Center was turned into a shelter for medical staff. This decision was made in order to keep their families safe and away from the risk of living in the same house with a person that could be easily infected at the first line of defense against the virus. 

 

          Today, it is possible to know this house that was the official residence of the head of state for more than 80 years.
