km de distancia y llegar a tu destino sin jamás haber puesto pie ahí?¡Sí se puede!
México es conocido como uno de los países con mayor biodiversidad del mundo. De hecho, es el país número 5 de los 17 países megadiversos que existen. Esto quiere decir que más del 10 % de la biodiversidad del planeta se encuentra en nuestro país. Su increíble posición geográfica es la que le permite gozar de tan increíble belleza natural. Es uno de los tres países en la lista de los megadiversos que cuenta con litorales tanto en el Pacífico como en el Atlántico. Además, su localización en la zona tropical, comprendida entre Capricornio y el Ecuador, nos da la oportunidad de gozar de climas tan variados e increíbles, cada uno tan sorprendente como el otro.
Es por todas estas razones y más que México cuenta con 34 ecosistemas inalterados, permitiéndonos disfrutar de bosques tropicales, selvas, tundras y desiertos, entre tantos otros que es imposible mencionarlos todos. El mundo está enterado de esto, por lo que más de 45 millones de turistas vienen anualmente al país para disfrutar de la belleza natural y cultural que México ofrece. Lo increíble es que no sólo las personas vienen a disfrutar del calor durante diciembre, sino que los animales también vienen a «¡turistear!» de vez en cuando. Desde animales marinos tan grandes como las ballenas migratorias, hasta unos animalitos con colores increíbles que vienen a sobrevivir el duro invierno, abrimos nuestras puertas a muchos visitantes, entre los que están las mariposas monarca.
Estas pequeñas amigas viajan más de 4,200 kilómetros para «guarecerse» del frío canadiense, y poder sentir un acogedor abrazo ¡sólo les falta pedir su mojito! El recorrido que realizan lo hacen a ciegas, sin GPS ni mapas. De hecho, las mariposas que vienen jamás han pisado el país, sino que nacieron en Canadá unos cuantos meses antes y vienen por primera vez de turistas. Es increíble cómo todas las mariposas que vienen son nuevas y jamás habían realizado esta travesía. Se cree que lo hacen con ayuda del sol, pero «a ciencia cierta» se desconoce cómo saben dónde detenerse y cuándo seguir. Cabe destacar que las mariposas que llegan son las mismas que regresan de nuevo a Canadá, por lo que la generación que hace el viaje debe ser increíblemente resistente.
En promedio, las mariposas monarca viven alrededor de 5 semanas, pero cuando el otoño está por llegar, nace una generación superpoderosa. Esta generación, llamada “Matusalén”, vive hasta 8 meses, pues son las que cruzan el enorme camino desde Canadá, para hospedarse en su suite privada entre Michoacán y el Estado de México, el Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca.
El Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca es una de las cuatro bellezas naturales mexicanas, reconocidas así por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, Ciencia y Cultura (UNESCO). Está abierto al público desde noviembre hasta marzo, que son los meses en los cuales las mariposas monarca vienen a colorear el cielo. Podemos entrar siempre y cuando respetemos las normas de este lugar, para así asegurar que las mariposas vuelvan al año siguiente y continuemos gozando de este espectáculo. No podemos ingresar nada ajeno (dejar basura) y tampoco nos podemos llevar nada de ahí (¡ni siquiera a las mariposas del piso!).
Esta experiencia es increíble, porque llegan a haber momentos donde estás caminando en el bosque y te rodean remolinos naranjas y negros. Puedes estar caminando y ver cómo grupos de mariposas se mueven de un lado al otro, todas en un baile natural e increíble, siempre al unísono. Inclusive, si te mantienes quieto por unos instantes, las mariposas confían tanto en ti que empezaran a posarse encima tuyo, y es ahí donde puedes sentirte realmente conectado con la naturaleza. Escuchar los ruidos del bosque, sentir los aromas de la naturaleza, disfrutar del sonido de sus pequeñas alas mientras ves colores volando alrededor tuyo, todo es una experiencia que nos vuelve a unir con lo más básicamente humano, nuestra propia naturaleza. Podemos convivir con la biodiversidad, sólo es cuestión de encontrar la manera.

Could you get to Mexico City without using your GPS? Could you travel to another country 4,200 km away and reach your destination without ever having set foot there? Yes you can!
Mexico is known as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. In fact, it is the country number 5th of the 17 megadiverse countries that exist. This means that more than 10 % of the planet’s biodiversity is found in our country. Its incredible geographical position is what allows us to enjoy such incredible natural beauty. It is one of the three countries on the megadiverse list that has coastlines in both the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. Besides this, it is its location in the tropical zone, between Capricorn and Ecuador, which gives us the opportunity to enjoy such varied and amazing climates, each one as surprising as the other.
It is for all these reasons and more that Mexico has 34 unaltered ecosystems, allowing us to enjoy tropical forests, jungles, tundras and deserts, among so many others that it is impossible to mention them all. The world is aware of this, so more than 45 million tourists come to the country annually to enjoy the natural and cultural beauty that Mexico offers. The surprising thing is that not only do people come to enjoy the heat during December, but animals also come to «turistear» every once in a while. From marine animals as large as migratory whales, to some animals with incredible colors that come to survive the harsh winter, we receive international visitors, like the monarch butterflies.
These little friends travel more than 4,200 kilometers to «guarecerse» from the Canadian cold and to feel a cozy hug… they just need to order their mojito! The route they take is done blindfolded, without any GPS or maps. In fact, the butterflies that come have never set foot in the country, but were born in Canada a few months before and come for the first time as tourists. It is incredible how all the butterflies that come are new and have never made this journey. It is believed that they do so with the help of the sun, but «a ciencia cierta», it is unknown how they know where to stop and when to continue. It should be noted that the butterflies that arrive are the same ones that return back to Canada, so the generation that makes the trip must be incredibly resilient.
On average, monarch butterflies live for about 5 weeks, but when fall is upon them, a super powerful generation is born. This generation, called “Methuselah”, lives up to 8 months, as they are the ones that cross the huge road from Canada, to stay in their private suite between Michoacán and the State of Mexico, the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.
The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is one of the four Mexican natural beauties, recognized as such by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is open to the public from November to March, which are the months when monarch butterflies come to color the sky. We can enter as long as we respect the rules of this place, in order to ensure that the butterflies return the following year and we continue to enjoy this show. We have to carry out our trash (don’t leave anything that doesn’t belong there) and we cannot take anything from there (not even the butterflies on the floor!).
This experience is incredible, because there are moments where you are walking in the forest and orange and black swirls wrap you around. You can be walking and see how groups of butterflies move from one side to the other, all in a natural and incredible dance, always in unison. Even if you stay still for a few moments, the butterflies trust you so much that they will start to land on top of you, and that is where you can really feel connected with nature. Listening to the sounds of the forest, feeling the aromas of nature, enjoying the sound of their little wings while you see colors flying around you, everything is an experience that unites us once more with one of our most human foundations, our own nature. We can coexist with biodiversity, it is only a matter of finding a way.
